David Colin Lockley
“I was born to create”
Born in the heart of the South African wine industry in Stellenbosch,it was difficult for him to convince his parents that winemaking was his chosen profession. Growing up on an old plum farm and with no history of winemaking in the family and being only 12 years old, there was no need to become a winemaker. After his compulsory military service he did his apprenticeship as an Caterpillar Earthmoving Technician after completing his apprenticeship he followed his dream and moved into the wine industry. While working for a cellar,he was fortunate that the cellar sponsored his studies at the local Wine College in Stellenbosch.
Being a practical minded person, enjoying wide open spaces and vineyards it was only a matter of time that David spent his free time assisting his colleagues in the vineyards, designing cellar layouts and repairing broken farming and cellar equipment.
From vintages in South Africa, California, Crimea and Romania, his philosophy has not changed: “Wine is made in the Vineyard. David enjoys making barrel matured red wines with balance, finesse and elegance, yet powerful in structure. The white wines are crisp, fresh and fruit driven.
At Thesaurus Wines David takes care of all vineyard work as well as the duties in the cellar.
